The Fallacy Regarding Newton’s First Law: Its Non Axiomatic Nature
Luis E. Acevedo Gómez
Abstract
This paper investigates if Newton’s first law of inertia fulfills the requirements in order to be considered as an
axiom of Newtonian mechanics as presented in the Principia. The fact that it does not fulfill its alleged purpose of
providing an error-free way of empirically identifying inertial reference frames, its inability to provide additional
information apart from that which is already provided by the second law alone and, the fact that it may be
deduced from the second law logically disqualifies it as an axiom of Newtonian mechanics.
