Widow Cleansing in Malawi

Abstract
When considering effective standards for addressing the dehumanizing violence and discrimination that women suffer by virtue of their gender, it is important to revisit the context and definition of such practices. This paper examines contemporary women’s issues and empowerment from a global perspective. It discusses the topic of widow cleansing in Malawi and its various systemic interconnections. Firstly, it presents the pertinent background and historical context of the issue of violence against women. Next, this paper introduces the topic of widow cleansing and the tension between the international and local discourse. Then, it reveals the inter sectionality of issues related to this meaning was revealed. This paper assesses the efficacy of respective international and local initiatives. Finally, limitations and best practices in response to the issue of widow cleansing in Malawi are proposed.
